This happened a few years ago my first summer crew year BUT, I was at canadian henley in a v8 and wewere like really behind lol so the launch that was following the race was gonna pass us to get to the front of the race and as he passed us he gave us a GIANT and i an not exaggerating like huuuge wake so uncalled for shoulda been a penalty shooot. but so I caught a freaking crab and was this close to being ejected. i had to go the rest of the race out of my foot stretchers and it happened in the first 500. uggh :]

Once again…

Why does shit like this happen…

There's something..

I wish I could capture it in a picture, or poetry, or words at all for that matter. But I am simply a participant, so I will try my best to describe this something.

This something is the feel of a perfect stroke.

and I mean PERFECT.

and for 3 seat… (This is my seat in the 8, and steryotypically the one with the worst form, however I’m sure there are some amazing 3 seats out there)… well… For 3 seat, a perfect stroke is a rare event.

There are good strokes, great strokes… But perfect strokes are rare.

It’s the moment when you feather up with the entire boat and instead of hearing 8 clicks, you hear just one. Where even the very clicks sound agressive.

It’s the moment when you catch together and as you drive you lose yourself in the moment, and your oar flexes, because somehow you made a rod made of carbon fiber bend.

It’s the moment when your lay-back is at the perfect angle, and you cleanly pop your oar from the water, and have fast arms away.

It’s the moment when you realize what the ripped hands are for. Why you sacrifice your time.

It’s the perfect stroke.

And I’ve done my best to explain.

OK SOOOO. a couple weeks back at southeast regionals we had to hotseat a boat that our men were using and so as soon as the boat came in we took off towards the starting line as fast as we could. our coaches had let the officials know ahead of time that we may be a minute or two late, and they said that was fine since the race schedule was already behind about 15 minutes. so we're rowing quickly up to the start and this westminster boat cuts us off and it was TOTALLY THEIR BAD, NOT OURS and they go "nice, coxswain. i hope you bitches catch a crab in your race." and we were all "wow, ok fuck you westminster guys you are no longer attractive." so after they got out of our way we reached the start and the official was like "AJRA(which is us), we've been waiting for a WHOLE HALF HOUR for you." i looked at my watch, which said 9:46, and our race was scheduled for 9:45, so we told them, and they said we were right. and then, they didnt let us race anyways. like wow, we were ONE MINUTE LATE? and there were only 2 other boats in our race. so we timed ourselves on the way back the dq lane and we compared times and we would have beat them by almost two minutes. AND THEN OUR TEAM CAME IN 2ND FOR OVERALL POINTS TROPHY. and if we had been allowed to race, we would have gotten first. thats my story (:

That’s freaking terrible. ALL OF THAT. Like just down right unfair.

WHY DOES SHIT LIKE THIS HAPPEN

One day we were bringing down a launch, and people dropped off all at once (not on purpose) and it rolled down the hill and into the water and flipped. I was not even on the launch but I ran down to get tools out of the water. I was even wearing a white T-shirt and I dove in to get something. And I and a few other girls got yelled at. HELLA NOVICE.

haha. Our coach wants to get the novi girls shirts saying “Novice Women: I’m why we can’t have nice things.” hahha

Last weekend at NEIRA's my team and I were in the grand championships but they were running an hour behind schedule so they kept making us run the warm up circle until our race came up. We had horrible winds from all over the place. (I'm a cox). When we came up to the dock (dock start) an official told one of my rowers to pinch and, not realizing we're starboard stroked he made me lose my entire point. Then a wind blew and we became completly horizontal to the dock. (It happened to other boats too) They just had us float back and wait. After about ten minutes they basically say screw it, tell us to go 100 meters up and do a floating start. Once we get there the boats started getting blown to the left and once again an official screwed up my point. I then hear "Coxswains you have your points. Attention, Go!" My girl's were just going up to the catch. But, happy story. We won by 5 seconds from 2nd place :)

Aw man, you sound like a kick ass team. I’m super jealous!

We didn’t win a race in the v8 all season:(

"Well. Are you around any time during the summer? Because I’m really interested in getting rower’s from different colleges to show me around! Btw, thank you so much for this message. It really helps to know about stories like yours :) " Yeah! I'll be here for both summer sessions, so basically, from June 27th - September 3rd. Are you local in SD?

Nahhhh, I go to cali every summer tho!

It would be great if we could coordinate something! (eeeep you don’t have an ask box!!!!)

The one time I was coxing, just as we got into the boat a huge wave came from a neighboring speedboat. Needless to say, our boat was soaked. During their warm-up I would set the steering, frantically scoop out water for 15-20 strokes, and make any steering/warmup adjustments. This continued on for 20 minutes before I gave up. fml.

Oh shit suck, nothing sucks more than a boat full of un-needed weight. (from the water obvi)

I have a kinda crazy story. I'm from upstate ny and a few weeks ago we had major rain storms...which led to major majorrr flooding of our boathouse. so it was like 2 and a half feet deep throughout the whole area and we had to move our trailors far away. When we were loading our trailers for states we used a launch to take the oars and riggers over to the trailers and it took like an hour to move the boats as we waded through the water. this is a few days after it flooded-http://a7.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/228169_987340090436_5508381_47213331_6422389_n.jpg so yeahh it was pretty crazy but made for a good memory!:]

That’s crazy! I hope nothing was damaged! (I mean I know our equipment is made for water but still lol)

The only real away regattas we go to are Stotes and Nationals, so novices don't get to come unless theres a really amazing freshman boat

HMMMMM! All of our regattas are away but one!

May 31, 2011
At my school crew is a club because the school can't afford to support it. But we still only pay around $700 (plus away fees for varsity)

Do your novice boats not get to go away?

May 31, 2011
Hey Im just wondering what inspired to join your crew team? Im thinking about joining the team at my college and would really appreciate the insight on what makes crew worth it.

I joined my crew team because I went to a friends regatta and fell in love. The enviornment was aweeeeesome.

As it turns out I made a great decision because I spend a lot of time with awesome people doing one of the most fun (and demanding) things in my life. :)

I would suggest joining the team, but remember it is a BIG time commitment.

Here's a funny story (kind of); It was, like, 50 degrees and I was chilling at the dock for the launches. I was sitting in our teams launch and my friend was on the dock. The launch wasn't tied and I started floating away. In an effort to save myself and the boat, I grabbed another launch with my hands. Both the launches shot out from under me and I feel into the water. When I went to go change into dry clothes in my gym bag, I found out my water bottle had leaked and all my emergency clothes were soaking wet.

Haha oh my that’s terrible! I’d be so pissed! I had to sit out one day and hold launches in the 100 weather…..

no mi gusta.

one year to play a joke on our coach, we waited until our coach was at the other end of the lake then everyone stood up in the boat and switch seats. One girl even switched out of her single into a quad

Haha…. you’re inspiring me to do dastardly things, my friend.
